Choosing the Right RTC

Choosing the Right RTC

When seeking professional treatment services for your child, especially when it comes to something as important as addressing their problematic sexual behaviors, it’s important to know that you’re making the right choice for their overall wellbeing. One such avenue for professional help is enrolling your son in a residential treatment center, or RTC. Kaizen Academy, situated 30 miles south of Provo, Utah on a 46-acre rural property, is one such center. To help you make your decision as a parent, here are a few guiding principles for choosing the right treatment center for your child.

Specialized Treatment

Kaizen Academy is a relationship-based residential facility that provides specialized treatment for adolescent males with sexual behavior problems. From a philosophical standpoint, we incorporate what is called “attachment theory” into our programs and clinics, as well as Good Lives Model. We’re fully licensed and monitored by the State of Utah Department of Human Services, and are a longstanding member of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP.) We’ve narrowed our focus to only working with adolescent boys who are struggling with current or past sexual behavior problems, including problematic sexual boundaries, sexual trauma, compulsive pornography, and other sexual issues.

A Clinical Approach to Treatment

The process of treatment for your child at Kaizen Academy begins with designing and identifying the underlying clinical issues, which then allows us to formulate an appropriate treatment plan for his specific context. There is no doubt — these are complex issues. Our multi-faceted and clinically sophisticated approach is designed to identify the personal and contextual risk factors, as well as develop personal protective factors. In all of our treatment programs, we emphasize accountability, empathy, honesty, integrity, and family reunification.

Appropriate Housing and Recreation

A typical day at Kaizen Academy begins with our residents performing household chores, learning the skills that are necessary for independent living. This includes cooking, washing dishes, cleaning, doing their laundry, and more. This program promotes social responsibility and becoming a healthy member of a community, guided by clearly established expectations. Kaizen offers a minimum of one dedicated direct care mentor to every four students in order to effectively coach and provide a positive influence. Our large property also provides opportunities for residents to have fun, new experiences that encourage self-confidence, physical fitness, and community spirit. This includes skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, and camping.

Development Programs for Living and Social Skills

As part of our treatment programs, helping young men develop independent living skills has a high emphasis. Each student is taught skills that help him to become self-sufficient, and includes topics such as cooking, education planning, emergency safety skills, health, money management, personal appearance and hygiene, and taking care of the environment. Similarly, social skills are developed that help to form healthy relationships. Social skills covered include anger management, self-esteem, communication, grief resolution, substance abuse intervention, and more.

These are just a few of the factors that should influence your decision as a parent in regards to where your son will receive the professional, licensed help that he needs. We hope that you’ll reach out to us today to learn more!
