What is a Residential Treatment Center?

A residential treatment center is a live-in healthcare facility designed to help patients recover from a variety of different issues from substance abuse to mental illness and behavioral issues. In order to provide each patient with the best care possible, residential treatment centers often focus on a specific set of issues which allow therapists to create a specialized plan for each person entering the program.

Here at Kaizen Academy, we’re focused on treating sexual behavior issues in young men and work from the ground up to reinforce positive lifestyle choices that help them to recover in a safe environment. Let’s take a look at some specific things you can expect from our residential treatment programs.

Community Integration

Community integration is key to any recovery program. Oftentimes, when someone is dealing with a behavioral issue, they become secluded or avoid being social either because they’re ashamed of the problem they’re dealing with, or they feel like nobody will understand. The goal of community integration is to reignite productive social interactions in a healthy way and help the patient understand that it’s okay to talk about the things they’re struggling with.

Recreational Activities

Physical activity has many beneficial effects on patients recovering from behavioral issues. Recreational activities have the power to instill a sense of self-worth in patients while creating an interest in a constructive and healthy pastime. Activities like kayaking, climbing, running, or camping are not only healthy for the body and mind, but they can be a powerful tool for creating healthy relationships within the patient’s life.

Transferable Skills

Another important aspect of residential treatment programs is transferable skills. The goal is to provide patients with skills that will help them become an independent and self-sufficient member of society. It’s especially important to focus on these skills with young children or young adults who will eventually need to learn accountability and responsibility. Transferable skills could include anything like cooking, educational planning, money management, hygiene, and health.

Specialized Treatment Sessions

In order to more fully address the complex challenges of problematic behavior, residential treatment programs use modalities of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness, as well as other therapeutic best practices. These treatment sessions can be done with individual patients, in a group setting, or even with the patient’s friends or family depending on the situation.
